An Auckland Council Exhibition Series at Community Art Centres in 2012-2013 featuring emerging curators working with leading, established and emerging artists.

Timing Spaces – 3-20 February 2013

Chinese New Year (10 February) is traditionally a time for reflection and balancing. The exhibition, Timing Spaces, is intended to explore our sense of time and place through Eastern and Western artistic perspectives. The exhibition encourages visitors to slow down and engage with reality, captured in film and interactive media through the imaginations of four contemporary artists.

The exhibition will feature a selection of wall projection art works at Northart Gallery, in Northcote, Auckland. Included in the exhibition are video-based works by Mengmeng Guo, and Clinton Watkins, while the other two artists, Leo Zhou, and Robert Carter, feature interactive art installations.

Two highlights of the exhibition are Guo, a recent graduate of Manukau School of Visual Arts, and Leo Zhou, a recent AUT graduate. Guo is interested in exploring Chinese Buddhism and the notion of emptiness through contemporary art films of water condensing and evaporating. These meditative video works will be contrasted by Clinton Watkins awe inspiring video loop of an avalanche. Rob Carter and Leo Zhou have each created innovative interactive video art works. These two installations will engage viewers by picking up their movements while present in front of each work.

The world is moving around us so quickly in contemporary times that ones ability to stop and feel a part of the here and now seems increasingly rare. Timing Spaces is an exercise in mindfulness that invites you to be in the moment. Timing Spaces is supported by AUT, CoLab, Manukau School of Visual Arts and The Edge. The exhibition is the final installment of Archipelago, an Auckland Council produced series of exhibitions by emerging art curators.
